Proses pelebaran bandwidth sinyal informasi ini dilakukan pada sisi pengirim dan disebut spreading. Sebaliknya, proses penyempitan kembali bandwidth sinyal informasi dilakukan di sisi penerima, dan disebut despreading. Pada gambar 1 berikut menunjukkan proses yang terjadi pada sistem spread spectrum.
