通过盒维数检测脉冲的起点位置, 对于不同的辐射源设备，由于各设备内部机械和电子元器件方面的差异，体现在发射信号形式上包含了丰富的非线性特征。即便是同一种辐射源设备，由于加工过程的工艺缺陷以及组装调试中的偶然差异也会使每个辐射源都具有独一无二的特征。通常，将开机、码字变换、供电激励变化、模式切换等过程中产生的信号称为暂态信号，其中能反应出信号个体特征的信息称为暂态特征。     只有特定的辐射源工作时才会有模式切换、码字变换和供电激励变化等过程，而开机状态具有普遍性。任何辐射源在开机时，其内部各个器件都会有冲激响应，这些响应即暂态信号，没有任何调制信息，只和设备自身差异有关，因而从中提取的暂态特征最能体现不同辐射源个体的差异。要利用开机暂态信号识别辐射源个体，首先要检测出暂态信号的起始点，然后提取暂态特征。
