Transformasi Fourier hanya dapat menangkap informasi apakahsuatu sinyal memiliki frekuensi tertentu ataukah tidak, tapi tidak dapat menangkap dimana frekuensi itu terjadi. Jika Transformasi Fourier hanya memberikan informasi tentang frekuensisuatu sinyal, maka transformasi wavelet memberikan informasi tentang kombinasi skala dan frekuensi
